Law school, like the practice of law itself, provides an almost unique level of intellectual stimulation. However, it is also a demanding endeavor that requires enormous investments of time and effort, which can cause anxiety and related problems.
Among law schools, Cornell Law School is a leader in recognizing that teaching habits that foster good health and effective time and stress management skills are a critical part of legal education.
Whether cosponsoring weekly yoga with CLSA, or providing a quiet space for students with the Wellness Room in our office, hosting a Wellness Walks with the dean of students, or providing logistical support for Let’s Talk and Let’s Meditate, we are committed to helping students focus on all aspects of wellbeing. In honor of Pride month, we want to highlight some of the amazing work our Gender Justice Clinic has been doing. Last fall, they supported LEGABIBO, the leading LGBTQ+ rights organization in Botswana, in submitting a shadow report to the UN Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination Against Women. Their report highlighted areas in which LGBTQ+ Batswana continue face grave violations of their human rights, notwithstanding a judicial decision that decriminalized same-sex sexual relations. The review is scheduled for the end of June/early July.
A few weeks ago, this same group of students submitted to the International Association of Women Judges a research memorandum on the Recognition of Foreign Same-Sex Marriages: International Comparison and Implications for Botswana. This comparative research and analysis seeks to inform the work of the IAWJ, as well as LEGABIBO, towards protecting LGBTQ+ rights in Botswana.

"For five days, we worked in a vehicle repair garage from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., helping 202 people in the town of Quinhagak, Alaska, file their taxes. ... what struck me most was how much trust these individuals placed in us, sharing their stories as we worked through their paperwork."
